My friend is buying a new Focus ST. People getting these cool cars and I'm over here with my seven-year-old Mazda3 that I've had for five-and-a-half years now. I just cannot bring myself to go into debt and have higher insurance and all that for a new car, no matter how sweet they may be. As long as mine keeps puttering along with no issues, I see no financial reason to get rid of it. Now, do I want something new and fast and awesome? Sure! Do I want to be in debt? Le nope. The struggle, it is real. I want something cool to be able to take to shows and be proud of, but it just isn't in the cards for me. I am trying my best to be satisfied with what I have. Well, I'm not sure that even matters...since I'm keeping it anyway.

I guess I'm just more of an old man than most of my car loving friends. I'd rather save for a home that's in the suburbs instead of the ghetto than get a new car every few years. I'd rather plan financially to have a kid someday instead of just have one while also drowning in debt.

At least I have done a few little mods to the car here and there (springs, exhaust, tint). So, it isn't totally boring! Of course, all the folks at Import Alliance last year thought it was. I was laughed at a couple times. No biggie. Didn't waste my gas going this year! Sorry, I know I'm rambling. I'm an old fogie and ready for bed.

Obligatory pic of Max the Mazda. In all his 68,000 mile glory. :)

Well....look at it this way.

A Focus ST is literally just a rebranded, reshaped Mazdaspeed 3. The block and motor are literally 90% identical. So maybe you should look at it as all these people buying what you've already had for years.

I also think the MS3 is better looking....

I feel your pain I'm in the same boat. Have had mine for 7 years now and even went so far as to take a Gen Coupe out for a test drive. But do I need another $300 car payment for something I'll only drive on the weekends when I have a perfectly* good** paid off car in my parking space? Probably not. It's really no fun making rational decisions

A turbo would also fix that stubborn reliability issue I've had, where it starts and runs great all the time and gets me faithfully to work every day. :) In all honesty, for a daily driver, this car is plenty quick enough.

Be proud in what you have. No need to buy something shiny and new. This Mazda, he's yours and no one else's. Be proud of him. Just because everyone else has a FoST/FiST doesn't mean you need one. Drive what you love and love what you drive.

#firstworldproblems

Though I know the thought goes across my mind from time to time. My truck is like new yet. I almost have it payed off. It's value stays high. RWD with a V8. Many reasons to keep it.

I think having a payed off car is cooler than having a car that you have to make financial sacrifices for due to payments.

Since when a Focus ST a cool car?
Plus your car seems to be in pretty good shape. Cheer up. There are people who have to take the bus.

True. Said friend is drowning in credit card debt and house debt as is and he's making it exponentially worse by taking on this huge car loan.

Feels. Driving my 10 year old B6 and at times I really want something shiny and new. But then I think about not having a payment and I'm good.

No offense to said friend, but that is dumb. My cousin did one step dumber though, he bought a new car, WHILE UNEMPLOYED. Needless to say, it was repo'd.

Sure but its not one hell of a car to get jelly about. It be jealous about an STI or a 5.0 Mustang. Also to cheer you up, I think your model looks a LOT better than its sucessor. But the new latest model looks cool too.

The 92-96 Camry/ES300 is the best car ever made :)

I got mine for $700, but it is a bit banged up and shit. Runs and drives good though.

Keeping up with the Joneses is good and all if you can A) afford it or B) cope with the debt.

You've got your head screwed on just fine fella and will do good in the years ahead. The Mazda while not being my thing (I love my Skoda), I understand, a friend had an MPS which was quite nice. If you look at it this way, your not a sheep you're not following on where everyone else around you is going ST crazy, again yes they are nice a friend has a 3door Fiesta ST and his dad a Focus ST (nice lines) but you've got a nice sporty but all practical car that you know and love.

In my opinion, it's better to be debt free. A new car isn't worth going into debt when you have a perfectly fine car. :)
